Studio > The Forest for the Trees

The Forest for the Trees is a site-specific, single-channel video installation that explores the tension between perception and disruption. Installed in the Arts Council of Indianapolis board room, the work transformed the space through a series of floating geometric forms, glitched and edited to distort familiar visual rhythms. These fragmented, shifting images were projected onto and around the tables and plinths within the room, activating the architecture and encouraging an immersive, dynamic viewing experience.

Conceived in direct response to the room’s existing artwork and environment, The Forest for the Trees evokes a complex interplay of conflicting sensations. Some viewers found themselves unsettled, experiencing an undercurrent of anxiety as the visuals fractured and blurred, while others felt a calming, almost meditative quality in the work’s accelerating, abstract movements. In this dissonance, the piece prompts reflection on how space, context, and perception shape our emotional responses to art, revealing the contradictions within our collective viewing experience.
