Curatorial > Civic Dreams

Civic Dreams is a social practice work by Indianapolis-based artist, LaShawnda Crowe Storm. Interacting directly with guests of Newfields' 2020 Harvest festival and Community Day in the Spring of 2021, the artist extended an open invitation to write down what they envision for their respective communities and to add their input to a composite tapestry. Lashawnda layered this activity over a pattern created with Indianapolis' redlining map. This gesture opened a channel for communication with the museum's staff and visualized the community as a collective voice informed by a multitude of lived experiences and value systems as well as the continued impact of more than 100 years of racist housing and environmental policy.
