Jacob Blank, Randy Timm, and Jarad Solomon | Free Art
Free Art was a six-pack of slap tags created in support of the City as Canvas: New York Graffiti from the 70s and 80s exhibition at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. For this six-pack, the museum commissioned three images from artists Jacob Blank and Randy Timm and another three from Jarad Solomon, creating a product that exhibited contrasting conceptual and formal approaches to the subject matter at hand. The packs were given away for free at the opening of the exhibition.
Artist statements read as follows:
Jacob Blank and Randy Timm
Jacob Blank (Chicago, IL) and Randy Timm (Des Moines, IA) are artists and designers maintaining a conversation on the intersection of art, design, graffiti, and collage as it relates to their practices. Their collaboration for Newfields posits the urban environment as a collision site of collective memory and erosion and how it relates to graffiti as an antagonist of institutions of art and ownership. The artists purposefully focus on tagging as an antithesis of what they deem as gentriffiti, the sanitization of street art as a tool of urban development and displacement. Through their remote collaging process, they have put a collection of photographs, drawings, and digital waste through an additive and subtractive process that emulates the erosion that produces the patina of urban spaces.
